Preparing Your Skin for Dermapen Microneedling
By Teresa O’Malley
Pre and post treatment skincare is essential for all skin resurfacing treatments including IPL, chemical peels, and microneedling. Using professional grade skincare as recommended by your therapist helps strengthen the skin before treatment and supports faster healing afterwards. This ensures optimal results and a smoother recovery.
How to Prepare Your Skin for Skin Needling
Preparing your skin correctly helps improve results and reduces sensitivity during treatment. We recommend supporting your skin barrier with active ingredients such as Vitamin A, which helps increase cellular turnover and supports skin repair, preparing the skin for regeneration. Vitamin B strengthens the skin barrier and helps maintain hydration and resilience. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that supports collagen production, brightens the skin, and helps regulate pigment formation. Daily use of a physical sunscreen is also essential before and after treatment to protect the skin and support healing.
What to Avoid Before Dermapen Treatment
Please avoid the following active ingredients for at least one week before your appointment. These include alpha hydroxy acids and beta hydroxy acids, retinoids including retinol, retinaldehyde and tretinoin, benzoyl peroxide and adapalene, and hydroquinone, kojic acid and azelaic acid. In the days leading up to your treatment it is also important to avoid excessive sun exposure.
Breakouts After Dermapen
Some clients may experience temporary breakouts after treatment. This is usually short lived and typically resolves within a few days. If needed, we may recommend DP Dermaceuticals Clini-Prep spray which helps support skin clarity and healing following treatment.
Contraindications and Suitability
Certain health conditions, medications and lifestyle factors may affect suitability for skin needling. All clients are required to complete a consultation form prior to treatment so your Dermapen certified therapist can assess suitability and ensure the treatment is safe and appropriate for your skin. For clients with deeper skin tones or those prone to post inflammatory hyperpigmentation, a pigment regulating skincare routine may be recommended prior to treatment to support the best possible outcome.
Aftercare and Recovery
After your Dermapen treatment your therapist will provide a full aftercare plan to support healing and results. Immediately after treatment the skin is typically soothed with a calming cooling mask to reduce redness and support recovery. You may experience mild redness for 24 to 48 hours similar to a light sun exposure response. Each treatment is followed by a professional peel one week later to further enhance results and skin renewal.
